Posting articles is a powerful way to promote your website.

That being the case, today we’ll look at how to submit to article directories.

Before we start, I need to mention that when you’re deciding where to submit, all else being equal, you should give priority to article submission directories that allow you to include an active HTML link in your Author Bio. you’ll lose a lot of the SEO benefits of your article submission without it.

Nevertheless most sites that don’t allow you to include HTML automatically transform a website address into a clickable link. You have a link, but without the valuable anchor text containing your chosen keywords which search engines use in considering page relevance to any given keywords.

Most of the article websites require you to create an user account before you’re allowed to submit an article. Usually, all all you need to provide is your name and email address together with a password to login, although sometimes you might also be asked for your physical address.

It’s a good idea to create a specific email account at Google, Yahoo, etc., or at your website to use for submitting to article directories. Although the amount of email you’ll get from the better directories you sign up with at first won’t be troublesome once you start submitting to many of the lower quality article directories which email users far more frequently, it won’t be long before you’re getting a great deal of email.

At most article directories, you will be asked to verify your email address before you are allowed to submit any articles. An email will be sent to you with a link that you need to click in order to confirm your address. Don’t leave it to long, because sometimes the link is set to expire and you’ll have to start over with a new registration.

Once that’s done, you can start the submission process by selecting the most appropriate category for the article you intend to submit. To get the most out of your article, it’s important that you submit it to the most relevant categories.

Thinking it will give them some advantage over the competition, some people are tempted to list their articles in unrelated categories. Don’t do that. Apart from the fact that it may cause your account or article to be deleted, it will work against you in terms of both number of visitors and SEO benefits.

Whilst this might sound obvious, make sure you read any and all instructions properly and fill out the submission form correctly. If you make a mistake and articles are manually reviewed, your submission won’t be approved. Where articles are accepted automatically, your article will immediately appear in the directory, together with any errors. Of course you can always go back and edit, but that’s little use if you haven’t noticed your mistakes in the first place.

Although the layout of submission forms may differ, the information required by most directories is fairly standard. You’ll be asked to provide the article title, the main content and a Byline.

Don’t put the title in quotation marks, don’t put a period at the end (a single question mark or exclamation is acceptable though) and capitalise the first letter of each word. Basic HTML is allowed in the article body at quite a few directories. This can be used to enhance the presentation of the article and add any resource links (never put affiliate links in an article).

In addition, numerous article directories also ask for a short article synopsis or description, and many also enable you to submit keywords to help users find the article when searching. If this option exists, always make full use of it by adding as many relevant keywords as the site permits.

Don’t submit unrelated keywords, they will make your article less effective. Use terms that are tightly focused on the subject matter, adding synonyms if you find you have more space, instead of broader, “catch-all” keywords.

Review your submission before you hit the submit button, ensuring you’ve not missed anything out or made any mistakes

If articles are accepted automatically, your article will be added to the directory immediately and you will receive a confirmation email from the article submission website. At the higher quality directories, all articles have to be reviewed before they are approved for inclusion. This can take a few days, after which you will be notified whether or not your article submission was successful.

At the beginning, submitting articles might seem hard work, but don’t get discouraged. Much of that is simply because it’s something new to you. The more you do it, the easier it will get. But fast or slow, the fact remains that the benefits of submitting articles are too many to ignore.
