Why Must Managers Develop Punctuality?

In a place of work, professionalism and punctuality go together. Punctuality needs to be practiced by workers of all levels and grades; having said that, for managers, being punctual goes a long way in ensuring a professional atmosphere for himself and his team.

Various managers may expect different styles of working from their subordinates, but whatever the style, all managers want their teams to be professional and dependable. However, is it reasonable for you to expect your subordinates to be professional and timely if you’re always late coming to work and attending meetings, and not informed? As the manager, you need to be professional if you want your subordinates to be professional also. The first thing you must do then is be prompt.

You may not think it, but punctuality in fact influences the quality of the output of your staff. Your task as the manager is to ensure your work and your team’s work is of high quality. It may be possible that you get to the office late, while your staff may be there earlier than you and will consequently leave the office sooner. At this point, you will not be able to observe and keep an eye on the activities of your team, and this could affect the quality of the deliverables. Your subordinates rely on you for comments to enable them to proceed with their work. If the manager comes in late to the office then it can mean a loss of several productive work hours of the team.

Punctuality in a manager is vital for the important components of any project: milestones and deadlines. When you are punctual, you would do everything you can to finish projects by their deadlines. So if you’re punctual, you give your team the sense you are trustworthy and dependable.

Punctuality also establishes an environment of shared trust in the workplace. Managers do face numerous unavoidable situations that can keep them from completing a project on time. Nonetheless, if you and your team are recognized for handing in projects in a timely manner, senior management is not going to badger if you happen to be late in finishing a project because they would more likely believe that you have a legitimate problem that is causing the delay.

Exercising punctuality fosters teamwork and camaraderie between you and your team. If your subordinates see you usually coming to the office promptly, they’ll try to imitate you. When you are all arriving and leaving at the same time, it means you have more opportunities to bond and connect with each other.

There are numerous benefits to practicing punctuality in the office, especially when you are a manager. If you are a manager and if you would like your team to be responsible, dependable, and reliable then you will first have to exercise what you preach, and you can start with being a prompt manager!
